SciTech Comm is a privately held California corporation. It was founded in 2007 and is based in San Francisco, California with an additional office in San Diego and a future office in Milan, Italy. The company was founded to assist inventors and intellectual property holders with commercialization, licensing, transfer and marketing of patents and intellectual property.

Our Mission

SciTech Comm’s mission is to be an intellectual property sounding board for US and International inventors who require professional assistance in marketing licensing, transfer and building relationships with investors, corporate licensees and entrepreneurs. Our goal is to commercialize promising patented or patent pending technologies that will benefit our clients and the good of the public.

Management Team

SciTech Comm was founded and is managed by experience professionals with numerous years of intellectual property, investment and business experience. In addition to our experienced internal team, SciTech Comm has a team of external consultants and advisors who actively participate in each client's engagement.

Scott Taper, President, COO & Co-Founder

Mr. Taper brings over 25 years of experience in licensing, business development and technology development and incubation at several well-known technology generators in the world including EPRI, University of California, and SRI International. He also worked as an engineer for General Electric and Lockheed. He was responsible for incubating and developing the first spin-out company at UC Berkeley, Berkeley Micro Instruments and for an additional 6 companies while at SRI International. He is well known and respected in the technology transfer and licensing community, having been a co-owner and moderator of the premier licensing and commercialization discussion group, Techno-L. Mr. Taper earned his BS in engineering from University of Pennsylvania and an MBA at Santa Clara University.

Dr. Mario Benassi, Ph. D.

Dr. Mario Benassi, Ph. D., member Board of Directors and Strategic Advisor - 25 years of academic and private sector experience including positions at Provincia of Milano, Logotel, Telecom Italia, IBM, Xerox, and IDC. Mr Benassi is a tenured Professor, Management and Business Administration University of Milan, Italy and a visiting Professor, Management Science and Engineering Dept., Stanford University. He received his Ph.D., Management and Business Administration, from the University of Venezia.

Gary Hooper

Mr. Hooper is an experienced biotechnology executive with a combination of large company and startup experience. He has been involved in the biotechnology industry since its inception, having joined Genentech in early 1980. While there he served in several management positions, including Senior Director, Business Development. In 1988, he joined Cygnus, Inc. as Vice President of Business Development & Marketing. At Cygnus, a drug delivery company, Mr. Hooper established five major strategic alliances and was instrumental in establishing the company’s IPO. After Cygnus, he joined Pharmetrix as President & Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Hooper streamlined the company, brought it back to profitability, established corporate partnerships and positioed the company for a successful sale. Mr. Hooper has also held positions as President and Chief Operating Officer of Pharma Patch and President and Chief Executive Officer of Ciblex Corporation, a developer of therapeutics by inhibiting cell to cell communication, which he also led to a merger. Mr. Hooper joined Genecor International as Vice President of Business Development, where he was responsible for corporate alliances, contract revenues, licensing agreements, including a $35 million Silicon Biotechnology® strategic alliance with Dow Corning. Mr. Hooper left Genecor to accept a new position as President & CEO of VerdiChrys Technology, a company pioneering the convergence of biotechnology and industrial chemicals to develop a process for producing inexpensive ethanol.

Mr. Hooper is a member of the Board of Directors of Accera, Inc. (a biopharmaceutical company specializing in Alzheimer’s disease) and Chairman of the Human Resources Committee. He is on the Board of Trustees for Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region, one of the leading California hospital chains with revenues over $8 billion. Mr. Hooper is Chairman of Millennium Group Holdings, and a board member of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Networks where he developed the Next Silicon Valley Initiative: Convergence of Biotech, Nanotech and Information Technology and served as Chairman of the Technology Convergence Consortium. He is a member of the Licensing Executives Society’s executive Healthcare Committee and past member of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Hooper is a member of the Board of Councilors of the College of Letters and Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern California and is on the Scientific Advisory Council of the Technology Commercialization Program at the University of Utah. He is also a Commercial Reviewer for the National Science Foundation and Venture Partner at Velocity Venture Capital.

Mr. Hooper holds a B.S. degree in marketing from San Jose State University and an MBA in management from the University of Southern California.
